Eye Bank Ananta

There is a sadness in this world when you know that there are people who cannot see the beauty around them. There is a kindness in this world when there are people around who will do anything to make their loved ones see. There is a greatness in this world when your loved one in death passes on the greatest gift of all: their eyes. Being human when you are alive and being humane after you die. This is what you can do by making your eyes immortal.

A Unit of Chaithanya Sight Foundation

There is a beautiful world out there for us to see and EYE are our window to the world. They allows us to indulge into the world in all its allure. "Of all the senses, I am sure that sight is the most delightful", the great Helen Keller said these words once, because the importance of sight is emphasized in these words. Yet there are many of us who are unable to enjoy the world in all its glory either because they were born with a visual impairment or an accident caused them to lose their sight. Globally about 285 million people suffer from visual impairment out of which 40 million people are blind. India is home to over 20 percent of the blind population of the world which makes India the world's blindness capital. What is amazing is that many of the causes of blindness are either preventable or treatable; like corneal blindness.

The cornea is the transparent structure in front of the eye. The loss of transparency of the cornea can lead to low vision and blindness. It is estimated that close to 11 million people in India are suffering from corneal blindness. This is where eye donation can play a huge role. Corneal transplantation is currently the only way to treat corneal blindness. It is one of the most successful organ transplants that can be performed on the human body. Each person who donates eyes can give sight to two individuals. Out of the approximately 1 crore deaths that occur in India, if even 1 percent donate their eyes, we could eliminate corneal blindness. Instead of burning or burying such a vital tissue, if it can be donated, it would brighten the life of someone in need. Ananta provides you to donate and immortal your eyes

Corneal facts

The cornea is the clear front ‘window ‘of the eye. It is the main focusing element of the eye and if it becomes cloudy from disease, injury or infection, vision is dramatically reduced.

One person’s donation can help save or even restore the sight of up to ten people.

Corneal transplant is a successful sight saving operation with 93% of success rate. Both young and old can benefit. There is a tissue shortage each year even in Kerala and so only the most severe cases are offered a graft. Many more people would benefit from a sight saving graft if more corneas were available.

Corneal Donation

Most people, apart from the very elderly, can be considered as a cornea donor, including people with poor eyesight.

People with blood borne viruses and with certain neurological conditions like dementia cannot donate.

The donation will not have any effect on funeral arrangements and the donors’ natural appearance is maintained.

Consent is normally taken after death from your next of kin.

The donation is carried out within 06 hours of death and can take place in the hospital/hospice or at the funeral directors. The procedure is always performed with respect and dignity by qualified health care professionals.

The need for corneal tissue is never satisfied, as patients who might benefit from the procedure are regularly identified. Corneal tissue can also only be stored for a limited amount of time. To date, the use of artificial tissue for transplantation has been unsuccessful.
